The purpose of the work is to identify, systematize and develop a new approach to determining the throughput and processing capabilities of railway stations, which directly affect them. To achieve this goal, systematic analysis, analytical methods and schematic representation methods were used. According to statistical data, it was determined that more than 80% of wagon flows during transportation are at railway stations. Methods for determining the throughput and processing capabilities of stations were studied and it was found that the approaches are different. As a result of the analysis of scientific works, factors affecting the throughput and processing capabilities of technical stations were identified on the example of their operation and were conditionally divided into 4 groups (technological, technical, human, environmental). As a result, a new approach to determining the throughput of a railway station was developed. This made it possible to determine the capacity of the station, taking into account the share of factors that have a permanent impact and cause time losses in obvious and hidden situations that occur during the operation of the station.
